MC LIVE ISSUE 2 @ ENCLAVE - Saturday 22nd June, 2013

MC Live came to Enclave in Deptford for a two day event. On Friday the 2nd Issue of Misery Connoisseur Magazine was launched and on Saturday we hosted a day of new performances from artists inside Issue 2.

Dave Charlesworth, Erica Scourti accomplished Ashtanga Yoga practitioner instructor Tom Norrington-Davies.

Using material from The Yorkshire Film Archive the starting point for Dave Charlesworth’s performative video installation was a series of visions from the tip of a vast maypole. Through the use of archive material and fragmented narrative, the suggestion was that of a broken folk record that operated at the boundary between authority and the authentic.

Erica Scourti brought a touch of chill-out to MC Live with Mental Movies: a four-hour playing of pre-recorded mental movies, based on guided visualisation scripts designed to help participant relax, clear mind space and dump unhelpful thoughts.

For over three hours Yogi Tom Norrington-Davies became a living sculpture, his body undulating in rhythmic breaths, against the backdrop of Dave and Erica’s performances.

MC LIVE ISSUE 1 @ VAN HORBOURGH, ZURICH - 1st Feb - 23rd March, 2013

MC Live’s first international collaboration took place in January 2013 at the Van Horbourg Exhibition Space in Zurich. The 3 week exhibition featured a projection of short films from contributors to issue 1 of Misery Connoisseur Magazine. Curated together as a show-reel the video works existed in addition and complementary to the printed material in the magazine, lifting the artists’ ideas off the page and into a physical arena.

On the opening night Jason Underhill performed an new work via transatlantic Skype video link from his LA home. Lasting the duration of the opening, the work included extracts relating to his expereince as an office junior at an ultimatly doomed co-orporation that revealed it’s true colours during the recent financial crisis.

Artists included: Amir Chasson / Annie Davey / Claudia Djabbari / Justin Gainan / Joey Holder / Jason Underhill / Burcu Yagcioglu / Kentaro Yamada

ISSUE 1 LAUNCH @ X MARKS THE BOKSHIP- 21st December, 2012

The launch of the first issue of Misery Connoisseur Magazine at X Marks the Bokship, London was a riotous affair! There was moral malady with the Cheese Connoisseur, teasing and tempting guests with an aromafied Adrahan, courtesy of Neal’s Yard Dairy

… There was the Dirty Martini Bar, with artesian vodka donated by Vestal…. and then there was the Mobile Misery award ceremony - the culmination of a Facebook competition to find the most miserable mobile phone image…. Winner Annie Davey took home a bottle of Vestal Vodka.

In the back room a live Skype reading took place with LA based film maker Jason Underhill - a calm comparison to the jollities and reverie unfolding in the main room… A very splendid night was had by all…

Misery Connoisseur Issue 1 is available to purchase here.
